Good morning, Nampa. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 3rd of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jesse Tree, a local nonprofit that prevents evictions, lost all its AmeriCorps service members on Tuesday due to federal budget cuts—service members were placed on a 21-day administrative hold and must either transfer or face termination—reducing the nonprofit’s ability to serve families.  KTVB
  • Local businesses and community members donated thousands of dollars and essential items such as socks, toys, and blankets to support foster children entering care. Les Schwab Tire Center filled nearly two dozen carts with donations over $500 each — while Foster + Heart organizes and packs duffle bags using a hotline to match each child's needs — to quickly assist families during transitions.  KBOI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Idaho State Board of Education approved a 3.5% increase in tuition and fees for all four-year institutions during a Friday meeting. The change will take effect for the 2025-26 school year (raising Boise State University’s tuition from $9,048 to $9,364) so schools can meet rising costs.  KIVI
  • Idaho’s public four-year colleges will charge 3.5% more in tuition and fees next school year after the state board met on Friday—rising costs and inflation drove the increase. Board President Kurt Liebich said schools including Idaho State, Lewis-Clark, University of Idaho and Boise State will see new rates with each school’s increase varying.  KTVB
  • Nampa School District unveiled Idaho’s first public e-sports spectator arena at Nampa High School today—this new facility lets students, teachers, and parents watch competitive gaming and learn about game broadcasting. The arena, funded with local sponsorship, will host intramural competitions and help prepare students for future careers in digital media and e-sports.  KIVI
  • The Nampa Golf Commission awarded $12,000 in scholarships to six college-bound seniors during the 23rd Annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament. Local sponsors such as CapEd Credit Union helped raise funds for youth golf programs and the Teen Council — the tournament has generated more than $277,000 in scholarships and youth support over 23 years.  KBOI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Horse owners in southwest Idaho are urged by the Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District and the State Veterinarian to give their horses annual boosters to protect against West Nile virus and Western Equine Encephalitis as warmer weather increases mosquito activity. Experts advise draining standing water and using EPA-approved insect sprays to reduce mosquito breeding — steps that help lower the risk of infection.  KBOI
