Good morning, Nampa. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 22nd of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A YMCA project in Western Idaho has gained strong support from community members who are uniting to boost the initiative—local officials say the positive momentum will guide next planning phases—with hopes to enhance local services. Officials expect more detailed proposals to be shared soon as community input continues to shape the project.  Idaho Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters passed a $7.9 million temporary override levy Tuesday—boosting funds to support Canyon County Ambulance District's emergency operations, which the district hailed as a major win for its community services.  Idaho Press
  • At a recent meeting, Nampa City Council restored $233,650 to Valley Regional Transit after concerns that cutting the funds would jeopardize a $560,000 Federal Transit Administration grant and on-demand service for more than 1,000 daily riders; VRT CEO Elaine Clegg said set-route ridership increased by 22.1% with schedule improvements. The council will decide on funding for the 2026 fiscal year in a future meeting to ensure continued transit support for residents.  KTVB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors warn that Idahoans face higher risks of skin cancer from more outdoor activity during Skin Cancer Awareness Month—key advice is to check moles regularly and use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Saint Alphonsus surgical oncologist Leah Stockton stressed wearing protective clothing and avoiding sun lamps to lessen the risk of melanoma.  KTVB
  • Firefighter Justin 'Riley' Shaw was injured by a falling tree while battling a wildfire last summer and spent 230 days in the hospital; he is now medically stable and can feed and dress himself despite not yet walking independently. He will move to a specialized rehabilitation facility in Omaha soon—where he will continue his recovery for about three months.  KBOI
