  • A Canyon County jury on Friday convicted a man of first-degree murder for killing his wife in September 2023+ the verdict concludes a case that had long been under investigation.  Idaho Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Idaho farmers are cutting back on potato fields because fewer people want them at home and abroad — this has led local farmer Nick Blanksma to report nearly a 30 percent drop in potato land compared to three years ago, and the USDA forecast on June 30 will show more details. The change comes as both domestic and export demand continue to fall.  KTVB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Idaho public defenders will see their pay increase from $100 to $125 an hour starting June 1 after lawmakers approved a new budget to help lower heavy caseloads (lawmakers aim to attract more attorneys for better defense).  KIVI
  • Idaho native Annette Tipton became the executive director of the state Hispanic affairs commission, replacing Margie Gonzalez who led for nearly 30 years—Tipton grew up in Nampa and worked in finance and government work. She is meeting with staff to study the commission and plan how to help local Hispanic residents.  KTVB
  • A stretch of Ustick Road in Meridian is closed between Owyhee Storm Avenue and McDermott Bypass for the Highway 16 project—designed to widen the road and connect ramps to I-84. Drivers must follow detour routes and face construction noise until mid-August—local residents say the timing was set during summer break to ease traffic.  KIVI

  • A recent Realtor.com report shows that buyers in Idaho need to earn $163,000 to afford a 3-bedroom home. Residents in the Treasure Valley have debated housing costs (with some saying fixer-uppers may be found for around $200,000 while others argue that incomes should be even higher) as the market remains challenging.  KTVB
