Good morning, Nampa. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 1st of October.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Canyon County makes 65% of the world's sweet corn seed and the family-run Crookham Company in Caldwell has grown seeds for over 100 years. Urban growth has reduced farmland while the company sends seeds to over 100 countries—Crookham warns that protecting farm land is now critical for the industry.  KTVB
  • The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes announced Tuesday that their Business Council approved an application to the Department of the Interior for a casino project on 40 acres of tribal land in Elmore County—this historic move will see 5% of casino revenue go to local schools and is expected to create jobs and boost the economy.  KTVB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A legal advocacy group called the Partnership for Educational Choice announced it will defend Idaho's school choice tax credit program — which offers up to $5,000 per student and $7,500 for students with disabilities — against a lawsuit filed on Sept. 17, and it intervened to support three Idaho families planning to use the program for education expenses.  KTVB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nampa Parks and Recreation has announced a leaf recycling program that will allow residents to drop off loose leaves at Kohlerlawn Cemetery from October 6 through December 12—weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from November 8 to December 6 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.—to be turned into mulch that conserves water and enriches soil.  KBOI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nonprofit Our Path Home reported a 2% drop in overall homelessness from the Jan. 19th Point-in-Time survey, but unsheltered homelessness in Ada County rose by 7.7%. The report showed a 50% increase in emergency shelter beds—funded in part by over $700,000 provided to CATCH Idaho to assist families fleeing domestic violence.  KTVB
  • Federal funding will lapse at 12:01 a.m. today if Congress fails to reach an agreement—potentially triggering a government shutdown that could furlough nearly 11,000 federal workers in agencies including the Forest Service and Veterans Affairs. Essential programs like SNAP and Social Security will continue while non-essential services, such as campground and trail maintenance, may slow down.  KBOI
  • Idaho’s COVID-19 Response Study Committee holds its first three-day session starting today to review the state's coronavirus response and to debate if orders closing houses of worship and businesses, extending emergency declarations, and imposing a statewide quarantine violated state code — the group of five senators and five representatives led by Sen. Dan Foreman and Rep. Barbara Ehardt will also consider additional review questions for future crisis planning.  KBOI

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Today, the Idaho Humane Society promotes Luna—an energetic pet who gets along with everyone and makes a perfect companion for winter—and urges local families to adopt her for a cozy season.  KTVB

SPORTS NEWS
