COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Valley Humane Society — the state's second largest animal shelter — has struggled with financial strains, capacity limits, and contract obligations while only taking in stray animals for adoption. Public Operations Manager Emily Gamble said new grant funding and increased staffing have brought improvements, though full services remain limited and the search for a new executive director has yet to begin.  KTVB

CRIME NEWS

  • Nampa Police arrested 54-year-old Mark Adrian Neal on Tuesday and charged him with first-degree murder in the 2015 killing of Akrian Evans on the 4000 block of Garrity Boulevard after new DNA and ballistics tests uncovered evidence; Neal was already in Canyon County Jail for drug possession.  KIVI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, federal funding cuts to AmeriCorps are threatening Teach for America Idaho as executive director Tony Ashton said 28 teachers might lose grant money they rely on for education expenses—this creates uncertainty for the group’s plans to recruit and retain teachers in low-income schools.  KTVB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Boise VA Hospital today is asking healthy drivers who pass background checks to volunteer to take over 600 veterans to appointments at their Boise campus using vehicles supplied by Disabled American Veterans—volunteers are especially needed in areas like Mountain Home and Magic Valley.  KTVB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Treasure Valley track standouts have qualified for the NCAA Championships after strong finishes at regionals and trials in events such as the 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, decathlon, relays and 10k. Nathan Green of Borah will run the 1500m semifinals today at 5:21 p.m. while other qualifiers from Mountain View, Emmett, Boise, Bishop Kelly and Capital prepare to advance in the meet.  KTVB
