Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 17th of June.
Good morning, Nampa.
Eva Steinwald, a Meridian realtor and karate studio owner, summited Mount Everest at 63 in May with the help of a sherpa—she briefly held the record as the oldest American woman to reach the summit until a climber in her sixties surpassed her and now she plans to finish climbing the Seven Summits by age 70.
Kourtney Hester of Eagle won the St. Jude Dream Home prize last Wednesday and thought her sister was joking when she called.
She toured her new $750,000 home designed by Berkeley Building Company (the prize comes from a fundraiser that raised $3.2 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital).
Nampa Police are searching for 16-year-old Leah Arvizu, who went missing on June 16 and is described as 5-foot tall with long-black hair and brown eyes, and they note it is illegal to harbor a runaway.
Star Harmony Chorus—an all-woman barbershop group—will open for international Top 10 quartet Artistic License on June 24 at Cloverdale Church of God.
They will also present a private performance in a local studio.
A winning $1 million lottery ticket sold in Star has remained unclaimed since last winter and must be claimed by Monday, June 30 at 5:00 Mountain Time—otherwise the funds will return to Idaho public schools and the Permanent Building Fund.
Three $1,000 winning tickets sold in Rathdrum, Nampa, and Middleton also remain unclaimed, adding to roughly $5 million in prizes not collected each year.
West Valley Humane Society in Caldwell warned it will reduce services or close if Caldwell, Nampa and Canyon County do not boost their contracts with hikes starting in October; the shelter’s funding requests would raise Caldwell’s payment from about $68,000 to $540,000, Nampa’s from about $83,000 to $720,000 and Canyon County’s from about $200,000 to $240,000—its board treasurer stressed that current payments do not cover basic wages. Caldwell hosted a town hall on June 16 and will hold another on June 30 as city council members review the proposal amid tight budgets.
